If I Had a Gallery

A running list of some of my favourite artwork. I hope you find as much pleasure as I do, fondly gazing back at them.

Museum Superlatives:

  • Most took my breath away: Musei Vaticani, Polish crown jewels at the Warsaw Royal Castle, Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal, and Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art
  • Not enough time in: Naples; Doria Pamphili Gallery & Tivoli (Villa d’Este)
  • Wished had more pieces: Museu Nacional do Azulejo
  • Underwhelmed by experience/layout/organization, despite vast collections: Wien Kunsthistorisches (maybe I was burnt out by viewing so much art/history this summer?)
  • Plan to visit in near future: Villa Borghese & Rijksmuseum
  • Think could pleasantly surprise me: Miramare Castle & Civico Museo del Mare (Trieste), Palacio Taranco (Montevideo), Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes (Santiago de Chile), Palazzo Falson (Malta), Museo de Bellas Artes de Sevilla & Pabellón de la Navegación, Dallas Museum of Art (missed the Cartier Islamic bijoux display, but European Art collection looks promising)
  • Current favourites: landscape painters, Baroque era, the vedutisti, maritime scenes, Dutch Golden Age portraits, triptychs, American Romanticism as presented by the Hudson River School (Cole and Church for the East Coast; Bierstadt for the West), J. M. W. Turner, and a select few impressionists
